  • Daniel happens after the captivity of Southern Israel into Babylon

  • A lot of prophetic material but not a prophet

  • Fits more like a historical narrative

Structure:

Chapter 1-6: Book of History (written in Chaldee)

  • Taken captive and taken into the imperial court of Babylon

  • Lion’s den

  • Not bowing down to the statue

  • Life of Daniel who is Jewish, Hebrew, and worshiped Yahweh in a foreign land

Chapter 7-12: Book of Prophecy (written in Hebrew)

  • Apocalyptic literature is taken out from Daniel

Purpose of the Book:

1. Illustrate God’s care for His people even in their captivity

  • God cares about every detail in Daniel’s life

2. To prove the Kingdom of God must be higher than any earthly Kingdom

  • Points to the identity under the Lordship of Yahweh

3. To show how God controls and directs the history of the nation

  • The sovereignty of God is able to control what is uncontrollable

4. To show God as the only fixed and unchanging source, and those who trust Him will never be shaken up by the political world.

Message of the Book:

1. Sovereignty of God is universal

2. God reveals His secrets to His servants, He does not leave them in dark
