1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:26-28
26 Then God said, “Let us make man[a] in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Structure:
Genesis 1-11 - The story of man running from God
Four Events: Creation, Fall, Flood, Babel
Genesis 12-50 - The story of God’s redemption
Four People: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph
Purpose of the Book:
1. To show the origin of mankind and the origin of mankind’s problem.
Image of God imprinted onto God
Genesis 3 - The fall of man. Disobedience to God stemmed all the roots of our problems.
2. To show that God is the original creator
3. To show God’s original design for humans
4. Origin of the nation of Israel
Message of the Book:
1. Everything created a good creation
Every single thing that God created is good. The origin of evil is twisting and shaping things out of it’s design
2. The original sin was disobedience
Disobedience is the hinge on the door that God is trying to bring us back into
3. Man is separated from God
4. God works with us through covenant
God makes promises with man that’s a two-way street.
5. God is a good father and works to restore us every step of the way
God loved us to create us and even when we fell he made a way to restoration.
