12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.

  • Suffering and glory is connected through Jesus.

  • When we go through trials we shouldn’t see it as a strange thing but we should rejoice.

  • If you suffer with Him you will glory with Him

Structure:

Chapters 1-2: Suffering in Relation to Salvation

  • When you have to die to a desire it’s considered suffering

Chapters 2-4: Suffering in Relation to Conduct

  • Persecution, coming from the outside in

Chapters 4-5: Suffering in Relation to Attitude

  • We have to have an attitude that allows God to do whatever he wants us to do

Purpose of the Book:

1. They encourage the Christians suffering under persecution

2. To prepare the Christians for the greater trails ahead

3. To show the Christians the hope of glory that lies ahead

  • Our suffering now is only for a moment

4. To exhort Christian believers to fulfill practical Christian duties.

Message of the Book:

1. God will balance out the believer suffering with glory and their glories with suffering

  • Suffering is meant for glory. If Jesus is going to suffer we’re going to suffer. If we follow Jesus into suffering we will follow him into ascension, we will follow him into glory.

2. Suffering purifies and proves the believer’s faith and character

  • Suffering focuses you on the Lord

3. Christ is the patterned stone of suffering and glory

4. The cause of the believers suffering should only be his godliness and not his last of discretion

  • Suffering should come because you acted in injustice but at no fault. We have to make sure we’re suffering out of our control.
