ISAIAH

Theme: Salvation

Author: Isaiah

Time: 750-600 BC

  • How God is dealing with the nation of Israel and the nations above Israel

  • Starts with Israel but moves into a grand narrative of the world

  • Reveals the plan for salvation

Key Scripture:

Isaiah 61:1-3 ESV
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
to grant to those who mourn in Zion—
    to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;
that they may be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.

  • Jesus reads this in the synagogue. After being baptized - the first sermon he gives.

  • Sets the tone for the rest of Jesus’s ministry

Structure:

1. Isaiah 1-35: Book of Judgement

  • Of Israel and the nations around Israel

2. Isaiah 36-40: Deliverance

  • Isaiah was a prophet through the reign of Hezekiah

3. Isaiah 41-66: Book of Comfort

  • Where we find most of the messianic scriptures of the book.

  • The optimistic, hopeful message of salvation

Purpose of the Book:

1. Even though Judah has a form of godliness. It was corrupt morally, religiously, and politically

2. To predict the destiny of the gentile nations

  • God cares about the Gentiles and judges the gentiles

3. Give a panoramic prophetic picture of the life and ministry of the Messiah

  • Unfolding of the nature of the Messiah. Life and Death of Christ

4. Describe YHWH as a holy God in contrast to Israel, a sinful people

  • Although he is above his people he is coming to rescue his people

  • God is willing to lay aside His GLORY not His HOLINESS for His people

Message of the Book:

Through judgment, the Holy One of Israel brings salvation, righteousness, and comfort

  • Mercy can only take place after judgment takes place

1. Only through the messiah will salvation come to all the nations

  • Jesus Christ is that mercy

  • It’s the coming judgment and the coming of mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment
