JOHN

Theme: The Eternal Identity of Jesus. Not just as God but as a theological person within the trinity

Author: Apostle John

Time: Before 70AD

  • Summarizes the other three gospels.

  • 90% of the gospel of John doesn’t happen in other gospels

  • The first 3 gospels are the synoptic gospels because they all follow a similar narrative in Jesus’ life

  • John is completely different in the substance of things that are going on

Key Scripture:

John 1:14 ESV

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  • The word became flesh. He came from eternity from the beginning, he became the incarnation of God for us

Structure:

Chapter 1-11: Jesus Ministry to the world

Chapter 12-20: Jesus Ministry to His Own Disciples

Purpose of the Book:

1. To show that God the Father sent Jesus the Son as Messiah

  • It hones in the doctrine of the Trinity

  • I will send to you the Holy Spirit, it isn’t me (Jesus), it’s a different person

  • This is eternal life… that they may know YOU THE FATHER.

Message of the Book:

1. The only way of approach to God the Father is through His beloved son

2. There is no eternal life apart from the son

  • Exclusivity when it comes to eternal life

3. Those who believe enter into a father and son relationship with God

  • We become adopted, we become brothers with Jesus, and our Father becomes God

4. Faith brings Life: unbelief brings death
