Theme: Conquest. How Israel took possession of the promise land

Key Scripture:

Joshua 11:23 ESV

23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses. And Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war.

Joshua 21:41-43

41 The cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the people of Israel were in all forty-eight cities with their pasturelands. 42 These cities each had its pasturelands around it. So it was with all these cities.

43 Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there.

Joshua 24:15 ESV

15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

  • The reason why Joshua became a leader is because he was going to serve the Lord whether or not he was the leader

Structure:

1-12: Military Campaign

  • How Israel went into the land and conquered the land

13-21: Tribal Territories Alotted

22-24: Covenant Matters

  • Joshua’s last words and reminding them of the covenant

  • We need to be reminded more than we’re instructed

Purpose of the Book:

1. To show the transition between Joshua and Moses

  • There is no success without a successor

  • How God uses leaders in the nation of Israel to fulfill his plan

2. To show how God was faithful to give Israel it’s land

3. To show how Israel had to work to possess the land

  • He gave them the land but he didn’t just let them sit back… they had to fight to maintain their land

Message of the Book:

1. God is faithful to keep his promises

2. God’s promises are maintained by faith and obedience

3. God gives grace for both faith and obedience

  • Even though you’re working. You’re not working alone. you are working with the grace of God enabling faith in you and enabling obedience in you.
