When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Structure:

Chapter 1:1-16: Jonah Runs Away

Chapter 1:17-2:10: God Rescues Jonah

Chapter 3: God Rescues Nineveh (Gentile City)

Chapter 4: Jonah’s runaway theology and God’s rescuing theology

Purpose of the Book:

1. To show that God is gracious and patient with those He works through and saves

  • Jonah is Ninevah. God is trying to work mercy into Jonah as he is working mercy into Ninevah

  • God doesn’t have favorites… he can save anyone and is open wide. We can not be prejudiced on who God chooses to have mercy on.
