Jude 3 ESV
3 Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.
It’s a letter of warning. There is a spiritual battle that needs to be fought for
THE FAITH… it’s a matter of salvation
Structure:
Chapters 1-4: Getting, False Teachers in the Church
Chapters 5-16: Ungodly Character and Judgement of False Teachers
Jesus is a judge. He is a righteous Judge. If Jesus’ mercy is rejected then the only thing left is justice
Chapters 17-25: Rejection of False Teachers, benediction
Purpose of the Book:
1. To exhort believers to contend for their faith
2. To warn them of apostate teachers and expose their character, doctrine, and deed by example
He wrote down not names but behaviors he did not agree with
3. To comfort them in the view of apostasy
Message of the Book:
1. True believers in the midst of apostasy must contend for the faith
2. All of the ungodly will be brought to eternal judgment by fire
3. God is always faithful to keep his elect from falling
God’s power is able to sustain us and is not in contradiction with his free will.
Who God chooses and predestines are the ones who choose him. It’s a mystery how those two things work together.
